We participated in a Multicultural Exchange Festival held in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture. On an outdoor stage, we performed traditional gamelan degung pieces.

“Komedi dalam Tragedi”: Wayang Momotaro
2024 March 9 @ Kyushu Geibun-kan / 2024 March 16 @ Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Art Cafe
We participated in the performance of Wayang Momotaro by Indonesian contemporary artist Heri Dono. As part of the ensemble accompanying Heri Dono’s puppet storytelling, we played well-known Indonesian melodies on the gamelan and provided rhythmic cues on drums to help guide the performance.

New Year’s Gathering 2024: “The Sound of the Gamelan Blossoming”

We performed with the members of Go On at an event held at Naraya Community Center in Hakata, Fukuoka City. To celebrate the New Year, a joint ensemble of Go On and LOU presented a gamelan version of Sakura Sakura.

BEPPU ART MONTH 2023
2023 November 11 @ BEPPU Bluebird Cinema
We participated in the Cultural Festival in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. In addition to performing traditional gamelan degung repertoire, we presented the Sundanese children’s song Tokecang using the bamboo instrument calung. Furthermore, we incorporated other Indonesian bamboo instruments, such as the karinding (a bamboo jaw harp) and the celempung (a bamboo zither), to create an arrangement of the Japanese children’s song Shojoji no Tanuki-bayashi.

65th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Indonesia: “Indonesia Culture Day 2023”

74th Japan Fairy Tale Festival
2023 May 5 @ Mishima park
We participated in the Japan Fairy Tale Festival, held in Kusu Town, Oita Prefecture, known as the “Homeland of Fairy Tales.” On an open-air stage, we performed a gamelan arrangement of the Japanese children’s song Koinobori, which is associated with the season. In addition, we hosted an interactive booth where visitors could try out the instruments, providing an opportunity to engage with the local community.

Fukuoka Gamelan Festival: “Gamelan in Resonance”
2022 December 4 @ Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Art Cafe
We performed on the final day of the four-day Fukuoka Gamelan Festival. We presented a gamelan degung arrangement of La Koro Sutro, composed by Lou Harrison, performing all nine movements in sequence. Additionally, we joined Go On in performing pieces from their repertoire. A report on the performance will be published at a later date.

Mamoru Fujieda Retirement Commemorative Concert Series “Tajigen Resonating 2020”: Gamelan Heart Sutra
2020 March 1 @ Kyushu University Ohashi Campus, Recording Studio
We had planned to perform in honor of Professor Fujieda’s retirement from the university, but the event was canceled due to the impact of COVID-19. Instead, together with the Paraguna Group, we held a small private showcase for invited guests. Alongside Geiko Avant-Garde Consort , which also originated from Fujieda’s laboratory, we performed Lou Harrison’s La Koro Sutro in its entirety, arranged for gamelan degung and early musical instruments.

“Sekai no Uta”
2019 March 23 @ NAMIKI SQUARE, Namiki Hall
We made a small guest appearance at an event hosted by the social welfare corporation “Ashita e Mukatte”, where Go On was the main performer. We played Ibu Trish, a piece composed by Lou Harrison. Interestingly, this piece was first performed at a concert in 2017, and it later inspired Go On member Konomi Tateishi to compose a new piece, Toki no Mahou (The Magic of Time). So, Ibu Trish and Toki no Mahō were performed consecutively at the event. A report on the performance, published on the organization’s official website, can be found here .

LOU and Paraguna Joint Concert

The Paraguna Group visited Fukuoka to accompany Yukitoshi Morishige’s lecture, and we held a joint performance. We also organized a party with Indonesian exchange students living in Fukuoka.

We participated in a celebratory event hosted by the Japan-Indonesia Friendship Association of Kyushu. Welcoming Indonesian exchange students, we performed Kalangkang, a well-known song from the Sunda region composed by S. Nano. Concert to Commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Lou Harrison: Concert 1 “Beyond the Gamelan - Towards a Hybrid Asia”

We collaborated with Mamoru Fujieda to plan and produce a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of Lou Harrison’s birth. The performance featured Western instruments played by guest musicians, as well as original instruments created by our members. We performed Harrison’s gamelan compositions and percussion works.
